Emotion Regulation for Your Kids

While crying is a normal response for kids, some children tend to cry more than others and get triggered by the slightest emotional disturbance

As parents and guardians, we want to know how to help children improve their psychological health. Kids have yet to know how to label their emotions and would often feel overwhelmed. Their inability to handle their feelings would often frustrate them.

Our mental health services in Manchester, NH, are here to guide you in teaching your children how to manage their emotions.

Before we determine possible solutions, here are some common causes of emotional outbursts:

  • Deep-seated emotional trauma
  • Underlying disorder
  • Delayed developmental growth

Now you’ll have to start teaching your child to name their emotions and help them acknowledge that these feelings are normal and valid.

If it is hard for them to name their own, you might need to tap into their favorite characters and ask questions like, ”Is he feeling sad? Why do you think this character is crying?”.

In reassuring them that you recognize their emotions and that they should too, you must be firm that feeling a certain type of emotion does not entitle them to certain behaviors like lashing out when angry or hitting a peer when others make them feel left out.

Emotions and behavior are so deeply intertwined in behavioral health that applying discipline becomes difficult.

Our team of mental health professionals will help your kids untangle their emotions in our psychotherapy sessions.

Access Mental Health Services are available to assist your child in controlling their outbursts and improving their ability to control their emotions.
